The Helpers
They spent their first night in a youth hostel.
The next morning he woke to find Phil’s bed empty.
Hours later he returned wearing a broad grin.
“I’ve found us both jobs.”
On Monday morning they arrived at a welding shop.
There was only one problem.
The employer believed they were skilled welders.
They weren’t.
They knew the basics.
It took the foreman less than half an hour to work it out.
He walked over, looked at them, and shook his head.
“Look, lads,” he said. “You two aren’t welders. You know that and I know that.”
They waited for the hammer to drop.
Instead, he smiled.
“Listen, you’ve got some guts coming all this way, and I know you need the money.
“You can stay until the end of the week.
“After that…
“…you’re on your bike.”
That week’s wages were like gold.
They bought something far more valuable than money.
They bought time.
Time to find the next opportunity.
Within days they drifted in different directions.
Their paths never really crossed again.
Without ever intending to, one man had opened a door.
Another had quietly chosen kindness over convenience.
Neither could have known how much those simple acts would matter.
Sometimes a life changes…
…not because of one great miracle…
…but because someone mentions an idea…
…someone offers an opportunity…
…and a stranger quietly decides to give you a chance.
